Attendance Rate Calculator
Attendance percent from days present, with chronic absence flag.
What it does
Attendance rate divides days present by days enrolled: 171 of 180 is 95.00%. The complement grades the risk, since missing 10% or more of school for any reason counts as chronic absence with excused and unexcused days weighed the same.
The tool above takes days present with days enrolled. It returns attendance percent, absence percent, and the status flag. The default 171 of 180 gives 95.00% attendance with 5.00% absent: on track.
Thresholds follow US Education Department guidance with UNESCO monitoring beside it: chronic means 10% plus, about 18 days of a typical year, while national chronic rates ran near 31% in 2021-22 against 28% the year after. UNESCO tracks enrollment against attendance worldwide without a single global absenteeism line.
Boundary cases decide cleanly at exactly 10%. Missing 18 of 180 trips the flag while 17 stays clear, which is why partial days and late arrivals need consistent local counting rules.
How to use
- Type days present.
- Type days enrolled, not calendar days.
- Read attendance first, absence beside it.
- Compare absence against the 10% line.
- Count excused and unexcused together.
- Recheck each grading period.
Formula
- present
- Days counted present under local rules.
- enrolled
- Days the student belonged at school.
- 10%
- Chronic absence threshold, any reason.
Partial day policies differ by district; apply one rule all year. Transfers reset enrolled counts per school.
Worked example
Example: 171 of 180
Defaults: 171 present, 180 enrolled.
- Divide: 171 / 180 = 0.95.
- Rate: 0.95 x 100 = 95.00%.
- Absence: 100 minus 95 = 5.00%.
- Flag: 5 is under 10, on track.
- Contrast: 160 of 180 is 11.11% absent, chronic.
- Tool shows 95.00%, 5.00%, on track.
