What it does

Chess tournaments score wins as 1, draws as a half, and losses as zero, so 3 wins and a draw in 5 rounds total 3.5 points at 70%. The record line 3-1-1 carries the same story in shorthand.

The tool above takes wins, draws, and rounds played. It returns match points, the win draw loss record, and score percent, so club nights and Swiss events report uniformly.

This math counts game points only. It does not compute ratings, tiebreaks like Buchholz or Sonneborn-Berger, or prize splits on tied scores.

Federation play uses the same point values across rated events, while online servers track identical scoring beside separate rating pools. Rounds pages set how many games make a full event.

Enter played rounds, not scheduled rounds. Byes and unplayed games follow house rules outside standard scoring.

How to use

  1. Enter games won.
  2. Enter games drawn.
  3. Enter rounds actually played.
  4. Read match score first for standings.
  5. Read record for the shorthand line.
  6. Read percent to compare short and long events.

Formula

Losses = rounds - wins - draws. Score = wins + draws / 2. Percent = score / rounds x 100.
wins
Games won outright, 1 point each.
draws
Games drawn, half point each.
rounds
Games played counting toward score.

Wins plus draws cannot top rounds. Forfeits count by house rule before entry. Percent lets 3.5 of 5 compare with 7 of 10 evenly.

Worked example

Example: 3 wins, 1 draw in 5 rounds

Wins 3, draws 1, rounds 5.

  1. Losses: 5 - 3 - 1 = 1 loss.
  2. Score: 3 + 0.5 = 3.5 pts.
  3. Record: 3-1-1.
  4. Percent: 3.5 / 5 x 100 = 70.0 %.
  5. Tool shows 3.5 pts, record 3-1-1, 70.0 %.

  • Ignores tiebreak systems for tied scores.
  • Ignores byes and forfeits scored by house rule.
  • Football scoring with 3-1-0 differs, use that page.

Common mistakes

  • Counting draws as full points.
  • Letting wins plus draws top rounds.
  • Mixing scheduled rounds with played rounds.
  • Reading percent as rating change.
  • Splitting prizes on score alone without tiebreaks.
