Classroom Library Calculator
Turn book count, students, and shelf size into books each and shelves needed.
What it does
Classroom libraries balance choice against shelf space. One hundred twenty books for 24 students give 5 each, fitting 4 shelves at 30 per shelf with no spare slots left.
The tool above takes book count, student count, and shelf capacity. It returns books each, shelves needed, and spare slots, so grant orders and weeding days share one number.
This math fits even distribution planning with one shelf size. It does not fit leveled bins with uneven counts, reference sets that stay shelved, or digital titles without spines.
Library guidance frames the same mission: access to books for every reader, with research collections and standards behind school shelves. Counts here turn that access into per student figures.
Weed before buying. Removing dated titles frees slots faster than new shelves hold them.
How to use
- Count books available for checkout.
- Enter student count sharing them.
- Enter books one shelf holds.
- Read books each first for the choice line.
- Read shelves for furniture planning.
- Read spare slots for growth room.
Formula
- books
- Checkout books counted together.
- students
- Readers sharing the collection.
- capacity
- Books one shelf holds.
Rounds shelves up since partial shelves still need furniture. Reference sets that never circulate stay out of the book count.
Worked example
Example: 120 books, 24 students, 30 per shelf
Books 120, students 24, shelf capacity 30.
- Each: 120 / 24 = 5 books each.
- Shelves: 120 / 30 = 4 shelves.
- Spare: 4 x 30 - 120 = 0 slots.
- Tool shows 5 books each, 4 shelves, 0 slots.
- Buy: 30 more books need a fifth shelf.
Reference table
| Per shelf | Shelves | Spare |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | 6 shelves | 0 slots |
| 30 | 4 shelves | 0 slots |
| 40 | 3 shelves | 0 slots |
Limits
- One shelf size per run. Mixed furniture needs split runs.
- Ignores leveled bins and genre balance.
- Ignores reference and teacher only sets.
- Digital titles need device math, not shelves.
Common mistakes
- Counting teacher reference sets as checkout books.
- Dividing shelves without rounding up.
- Planning books each without shelf reality.
- Forgetting growth slots for new orders.
- Mixing bin counts with shelf counts.

Questions
How many books per student do I have?
Divide books by students. 120 for 24 is 5 each.
How many shelves do I need?
Divide books by shelf capacity and round up. 120 at 30 needs 4.
What are spare slots?
Empty shelf seats after shelving. 4 shelves at 30 hold 120 exactly for zero spare.
Should reference sets count?
No. Count only books students may check out.
How do I plan growth?
Keep 10 to 20% slots spare, or one shelf free per few dozen books.
What about ebooks?
They need device and license counts instead of shelf math.
