What it does

Debate rounds run on stacked speeches with judging gaps between them. Six 5 minute speeches with two 10 minute breaks total 50 minutes, which is the block the room booking must hold.

The tool above takes speech count, minutes each, break count, and break minutes. It returns speaking minutes, break minutes, and the grand total, so practice nights and class showcases schedule cleanly.

This math fits fixed speech lengths with set breaks. It does not fit cross examination that floats, prep time that varies by event, or tournaments running many rooms in parallel.

Speech and debate guides frame the same parts: set events with prepared speeches and limited prep beside debate formats that argue topics across timed constructive and rebuttal speeches.

Rehearse with the timer visible. Speeches that run 30 seconds long across six slots steal 3 minutes from breaks or the next class.

How to use

  1. Count speeches in the block.
  2. Enter minutes each speech runs.
  3. Enter break count between speeches.
  4. Enter minutes per break.
  5. Read speaking first for the program line.
  6. Read grand total for the room booking.

Formula

Speaking = speeches x minutes each. Breaks = break count x break minutes. Total = speaking + breaks.
speeches
Speeches delivered in the block.
minutes each
Timed length per speech.
breaks
Judging and transition gaps.

At least one speech is required. Zero breaks fits back to back showcases. Prep and cross examination need their own lines where they float.

Worked example

Example: 6 speeches at 5 minutes with 2 breaks of 10

Speeches 6, minutes each 5, breaks 2, break minutes 10.

  1. Speaking: 6 x 5 = 30 min speaking.
  2. Breaks: 2 x 10 = 20 min breaks.
  3. Total: 30 + 20 = 50 min total.
  4. Tool shows 30 min speaking, 20 min breaks, 50 min total.
  5. Booking: reserve 60 minutes with setup and exit.

Limits

  • Fixed lengths only. Floating cross exam needs its own line.
  • Ignores prep time that varies by event.
  • One room only. Parallel rooms multiply staffing, not time.
  • Judging deliberation past breaks needs added minutes.

Common mistakes

  • Counting speakers instead of speeches.
  • Forgetting breaks between every block.
  • Mixing minutes and seconds in one line.
  • Booking the room for speaking only.
  • Letting every speech run long without trimming.
