What it does

Treats count as calories, and small dogs run out fast. A 20 lb dog budgets 34 kcal of treats a day, barely one 25 kcal biscuit, while a 10 lb dog budgets 21 kcal and overshoots on that same biscuit. The 10 % rule keeps extras honest.

The tool above runs resting energy math. Enter weight and kcal per treat, and it prints daily RER, the 10 % treat budget, and the whole-treat count. Defaults give 342 kcal days with 1 biscuit; the 50 lb practice case gives 750 kcal with 3.

Veterinary sources set both halves. Ohio State nutrition services give RER as 70 times kg to the 3/4 with a 10 kg worked example near 400, and AKC caps treats at 10 % of daily calories with small-dog math near 18 kcal. The linear 70+30xkg shortcut fits typical pet weights.

Count everything against the budget. Training bits, dental chews, and table scraps all draw from the same 10 %, and rounding down keeps the day inside the line. Active and intact dogs run higher daily needs; ask a vet for the multiplier.

How to use

  1. Enter the dog weight in pounds.
  2. Enter kcal per treat from the label.
  3. Read the treat budget first.
  4. Read the treat count.
  5. Count every extra against the budget.
  6. Confirm portions with your vet.

Formula

RER = 70 + 30 x kg (linear NRC shortcut). Treat budget = RER x 10 %. Count = floor(budget / kcal each).
weight
Dog weight in pounds, converted inside.
kcal each
Calories per treat piece.

Ohio State gives the exact 70xkg^0.75 form (10 kg is ~400); AKC sets the 10 % calorie rule with worked examples.

Worked example

Example: 20 lb dog

Defaults: 20 lb dog with 25 kcal biscuits.

  1. Inputs: 20 lb dog, 25 kcal biscuits.
  2. Kg: 20 / 2.20462 = 9.07.
  3. RER: 70 + 30 x 9.07 = 342 kcal/day.
  4. Budget: 342 x 10 % = 34 kcal.
  5. Count: floor(34 / 25) = 1 biscuit. Tool shows 34 kcal treats, 1 treat, 342 kcal/day.

Limits

  • RER baseline only. MER multipliers vary by dog.
  • Linear form suits 2-45 kg; extremes need exact.
  • Ignores diet foods and medical needs.
  • Vet guidance rules individual plans.

Common mistakes

  • Free-feeding treats past 10 %.
  • One big biscuit for a small dog.
  • Skipping label kcal math.
  • Forgetting training bits count.
  • Using MER appetite as the budget.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

10 lb dog, 25 kcal biscuits?

Kg 4.54. RER 70 + 136.08 = 206. Budget 20.6, shown as 21. floor(20.6/25) = 0 biscuits; use bits.

50 lb dog, 25 kcal biscuits?

Kg 22.68. RER 70 + 680.39 = 750. Budget 75. 75 / 25 = 3 biscuits.

Questions

What is RER?

Resting energy: 70 + 30 x kg (NRC shortcut for 2-45 kg). Here 342 kcal a day.

How many treat calories?

Ten percent of daily calories per AKC. Here 34 kcal of the 342 day.

How many biscuits?

Budget over kcal each, rounded down. Here floor(34/25) = 1 biscuit.

Exact or linear RER?

Exact form 70 x kg^0.75 suits extremes; the linear form fits typical pet weights.

Do small dogs get fewer treats?

Yes. Small dogs get only ~18-21 kcal of treats; one big biscuit overshoots the day.

Do all extras count?

Yes. Training rewards, dental chews, and table scraps all draw from the same 10 %.
