Lawn Mowing Time Calculator
Cutting minutes from lawn size and mower pace.
What it does
Mowing time follows machine math: width times speed gives theoretical pace, efficiency trims it for overlap and turns, and area divided by the result gives minutes. Guessing skips the trimming half entirely.
The tool above takes lawn area, mower width, ground speed, and efficiency. It returns cutting minutes with the effective rate beside it, in feet or meters.
The defaults cut 5,000 sq ft with a 22 in walk mower at 3 mph and 80%: 387 sq ft per min, about 12.9 min. The metric mirror (464.5 sq m, 56 cm, 4.8 km/h) gives 36 sq m per min with 13 min.
Capacity math follows Iowa State field capacity guidance with Purdue machine sizing matching: width times speed over 8.25 for acres per hour, times efficiency for effective. NIST conversions carry the mph and acre factors.
How to use
- Pick imperial (ft, mph) or metric.
- Enter mowable lawn area.
- Enter full mower width.
- Enter walking or driving speed.
- Enter efficiency for overlap and turns.
- Read cutting minutes, then add trimming.
Formula
- width
- Full cut width in feet (or meters).
- speed
- Ground speed, 88 ft/min per mph.
- efficiency
- Share of time actually cutting, decimal.
- 8.25
- Acres per hour constant (43560/5280).
Riding and zero turn units plug their own widths and speeds into the same line; nothing hard codes walk mowers. Bagging, wet grass, slopes, and rest lower efficiency below the 80 default.
Worked example
Example: 5000 sq ft, 22 in, 3 mph
Defaults: imperial, 5000 sq ft, 22 in width, 3 mph, 80%.
- Width: 22 / 12 = 1.833 ft.
- Speed: 3 x 88 = 264 ft per min.
- Theory: 1.833 x 264 = 484 sq ft per min.
- Effective: 484 x 0.8 = 387 sq ft per min.
- Time: 5000 / 387 = 12.9 min.
- Tool shows 12.9 min, 387 sq ft per min. Metric mirror gives 13 min.
Reference table
| Setup | Rate | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 22 in, 3 mph, 80% | 387 sq ft/min | 12.9 min |
| 21 in, 2.5 mph, 70% | 270 sq ft/min | 18.6 min |
| 42 in rider, 5 mph, 80% | 1232 sq ft/min | 4.1 min |
Limits
- Cutting only; trimming separate.
- Efficiency is a guess, not a gauge.
- Wet and tall grass slow pace.
- Slopes cap safe speed.
Common mistakes
- Counting full width with no overlap.
- Skipping turns and trimming time.
- Using top speed on rough lawns.
- Mowing wet grass at full pace.
- Forgetting bag emptying stops.
Try it yourself
Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
42 in rider at 5 mph, 80%?
1232 sq ft per min, about 4.1 min.
Why longer in reality?
Trees, edges, slopes, and bagging sit outside cutting math.
Efficiency meaning?
Share of pass time actually cutting after overlap and turns.
Questions
How long to mow 5000 sq ft?
About 13 min cutting with a 22 in mower at 3 mph, plus trimming.
What is field efficiency?
Cutting share after overlap, turns, and stops; 65 to 85% typical.
Wider mower always faster?
Only where gates, trees, and slopes still fit it.
Riding vs walking?
Same formula, bigger width and speed numbers.
Wet grass slower?
Yes, drop speed and efficiency together.
Trimming included?
No, add edging and blow off separately.
