Mussel Steam Calculator
Mussel steam minutes and broth by weight.
What it does
Steamed mussels trade patience for speed: five covered minutes open two pounds while broth, garlic, and wine pool below. Unopened shells stay out of bowls.
The tool above takes mussel weight in pounds or kilos. It returns steam minutes, broth cups, and the discard rule.
The default 2 lb needs 5 minutes with 1 cup broth. The 4 lb case needs 7 minutes with 2 cups, and metric 0.9 kg matches the default.
Seafood cooking methods steam mussels covered with shell checks before and after: tap opens, cook closeds, discard the stubborn. Broth near a cup per two pounds carries aromatics.
Serve straight from pans with crusty bread for the liquor. Holding toughens meat while reheating compounds it, so time mussels to the table, not the clock.
