What it does

Pond liners must run down one wall, across the bottom, up the far wall, and still lap over the edges for anchoring. Guessing short means seaming scraps mid project; the formula below sizes the sheet in one pass.

The tool above takes pond length, width, max depth, and edge overlap. It returns the liner sheet with its area, in feet or meters.

The defaults size a 10 by 8 ft pond at 2 ft deep with 2 ft total overlap: a 16 by 14 ft sheet covering 224 sq ft. The metric mirror (3.05 m, 2.44 m, 61 cm) gives 4.9 by 4.3 m with 21 sq m.

The down plus up plus edge math follows Kansas State water gardening guidance with Clemson pond construction matching depths and liner practice. Both describe flexible rubber sheets over shelves and drops.

How to use

  1. Pick imperial (ft, in) or metric.
  2. Enter widest length and width.
  3. Enter max depth, not average.
  4. Enter overlap total for both edges.
  5. Read the sheet size first.
  6. Buy the next stock size up.

Formula

Sheet = length + 2 x depth + overlap. Same for width. Area = sheet L x W.
depth
Max depth, down one wall plus up the other.
overlap
Edge anchor total for both sides.
widest
Kidney shapes measure widest points.

Shelves, bogs, waterfalls, and anchor trenches drink extra liner beyond the box math, so odd shapes add margin. Depth always measures from top of bank to the deepest point.

Worked example

Example: 10 by 8 ft, 2 ft deep

Defaults: imperial, 10 by 8 ft, 24 in deep, 24 in overlap total.

  1. Length: 10 + 2x2 + 2 = 16 ft.
  2. Width: 8 + 2x2 + 2 = 14 ft.
  3. Sheet: 16 by 14 ft.
  4. Area: 16 x 14 = 224 sq ft.
  5. Tool shows 16 by 14 ft, 224 sq ft.
  6. Metric mirror gives 4.9 by 4.3 m, 21 sq m.

Limits

  • Box math, not sculpted shelves.
  • Waterfalls and bogs need extra.
  • Thick EPDM for deep koi ponds.
  • Punctures ignore perfect sizing.

Common mistakes

  • Using average instead of max depth.
  • Overlap per side entered as total.
  • Measuring narrow instead of widest.
  • Rounding down to stock sizes.
  • Skipping underlayment fabric.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

6 by 4 pond at 1.5 ft?

11 by 9 ft sheet, 99 sq ft.

Overlap total meaning?

Both edges added, 1 ft a side by default.

Stock size advice?

Always round up, never down.

Questions

How to size a pond liner?

Length plus twice depth plus overlap, same for width.

How much overlap?

About 2 ft total for edge anchoring.

Kidney shape?

Measure widest length, width, and max depth.

How deep for fish?

Warm climates want 3 to 4 ft zones for fish.

EPDM thickness?

40 to 45 mil flexible rubber suits most garden ponds.

Underlayment needed?

Yes, fabric under liner stops punctures from below.
