Ratio Simplifier Calculator
Reduce ratios to simplest form with decimal and percent.
What it does
Ratios compare two quantities by division, and simplest form divides out their greatest common divisor. Twelve to sixteen reduces to three to four, the same relationship smaller numbers state cleaner.
The tool above takes both parts. It returns the simplest form with decimal and percent equivalents.
Cooking lives on ratios that scale: one part rice to two water doubles and halves without new math. Mixing paint, mortar, and feed all follow the same pattern.
Proportions set two ratios equal to solve missing parts. Cross multiplication turns a:b equals c:x into x equals b times c over a, which scales any recipe to any pan.
How to use
- Enter both parts in matching units.
- Read the simplest form for recipes and mixes.
- Take decimal or percent for comparisons.
- Scale by multiplying both parts equally.
Formula
- GCD
- Largest number splitting both parts.
- a / b
- Decimal value of the comparison.
Decimals in inputs scale first: 1.5:2.25 doubles to 3:4.5, then to 2:3 exactly.
Worked example
Example: simplify 12:16
Parts 12 and 16.
- GCD of 12 and 16 is 4.
- Divide: 12/4 : 16/4 = 3:4.
- Decimal: 12 / 16 = 0.75.
- Percent: 75%.
Reference table
| As written | Simplest | Means |
|---|---|---|
| 2:4 | 1:2 | Half |
| 3:9 | 1:3 | Third |
| 10:15 | 2:3 | Two thirds |
| 12:16 | 3:4 | Three quarters |
| 50:100 | 1:2 | Half |
Limits
- Second part cannot be zero.
- Tiny decimals round near whole ratios.
- Units must match for pure ratios.
- Rates with units need labels kept.
Common mistakes
- Adding across ratios instead of scaling.
- Stopping one step early at 6:8.
- Mixing units between the parts.
- Reading 1:3 as one third off instead of one part in four.
- Rounding before the final form.
Try it yourself
Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
Simplify 15:25?
GCD 5. Then 3:5, which is 0.6 or 60%.
Scale 1:2 glue mix to 6 parts total?
Each part is 2. So 2:4.
Questions
What is a ratio?
A division comparing two quantities, written a:b.
How do I simplify ratios?
Divide both parts by their greatest common divisor.
Ratio or fraction?
Same value, different jobs. Ratios compare parts; fractions take shares.
What is 1:3 of 100?
Four total parts of 25: 25 and 75.
Can ratios use decimals?
Yes. Scale to wholes first, then simplify.
How do proportions solve?
Cross multiply: a/b = c/x gives x = b·c/a.
