Reading Time Calculator
Reading minutes, hours, and days from word count at silent, study, or custom speed.
What it does
Reading time is word count divided by speed: the same novel takes an evening for a fast reader and a week of commutes for a slow one. Publishers print page counts, but words per minute turn any length into calendar time.
The tool above takes total words with reading speed. It returns minutes with hours and the days needed at 30 minutes a day beside them.
The default of 50,000 words at the 238 wpm adult average takes 210 min, which is 3 h 30 min or 7 days of half hour sessions. The same words as fiction near 260 wpm drop to 192 min, while study reading near 175 wpm stretches to 286 min.
Speeds follow the Brysbaert meta-analysis of 190 reading studies with the published journal record matching its 238 silent and 183 aloud figures. Both place most adults between 175 and 300 for non-fiction.
How to use
- Enter the total word count from the book data or word processor.
- Keep 238 wpm for average silent reading of non-fiction.
- Use 260 for light fiction or 175 for dense study material.
- Read minutes first, then hours for single sittings.
- Use the days line to plan a daily habit.
Formula
- words
- Total words to read.
- wpm
- Words per minute: 238 average, 260 fiction, 175 study.
- 30

Speeds are silent reading averages with normal comprehension. Reading aloud runs near 183 wpm, and technical pages with figures run slower than any single number.
Worked example
Example: 50,000 words at 238 wpm

- Hours: 210 min = 3 h 30 min.
- Days: 210 / 30 = 7 days at 30 min a day.
- Fiction check: 50,000 / 260 = 192 min.
- Tool shows 210 min, 3 h 30 min, 7 days at 30 min a day.

Limits
- Average speed only; your pace varies by topic and tiredness.
- Figures, tables, and notes add time beyond word count.

- Comprehension checks and rereads sit outside the clock.
Common mistakes
- Using 300+ wpm speed claims that assume skimming.
- Counting pages instead of words across formats.
- Reading aloud at silent speeds.
- Planning zero breaks inside multi hour totals.
- Treating study reading at fiction pace.
