What it does

Hourly and salary figures describe the same pay through different windows. The bridge is time: hourly wage times hours per week times working weeks per year equals gross annual pay. Divide that year into 12, 26, or 52 slices for monthly, biweekly, and weekly checks.

The tool above runs both directions. Enter an hourly wage to see the salary ladder, or enter a salary to see its hourly value at your actual hours. Unpaid time off matters, so set working weeks honestly: two unpaid weeks turn 52 into 50.

Gross is not take home. Taxes, retirement, and insurance leave before the money reaches you, often removing a fifth to a third. Use the outputs for comparing offers, then a paycheck estimator for net pay.

How to use

  1. Pick the direction: wage to salary, or salary to wage.
  2. Enter your real weekly hours, including the usual extra, not the contract line.
  3. Set working weeks per year after unpaid time off.
  4. Compare offers on annual pay at equal hours, and on hourly pay when hours differ.

Formula

Annual = hourly x hours per week x working weeks. Monthly = annual / 12. Biweekly = annual / 26. Weekly = annual / 52. Hourly = annual / (hours x weeks).
hourly
Pay per hour before tax.
hours x weeks
Yearly hours: weekly hours times working weeks.
12 / 26 / 52
Divisors for monthly, biweekly, and weekly checks.

Biweekly divides by 26 pay periods, which leaves two months a year with three checks. Semi monthly (twice a month, 24 periods) is a different schedule with slightly larger checks; this tool uses the biweekly 26.

Worked example

Example: $25 per hour, 40 hours, 52 weeks

Wage 25, full time 40 hours, full year 52 weeks.

  1. Weekly: 25 x 40 = $1,000.00.
  2. Annual: 1,000 x 52 = $52,000.00.
  3. Monthly: 52,000 / 12 = $4,333.33.
  4. Biweekly: 52,000 / 26 = $2,000.00.
  5. Reverse check: 52,000 / (40 x 52) = $25.00 per hour.

$15.00$31,200.00$2,600.00
$20.00$41,600.00$3,466.67
$25.00$52,000.00$4,333.33
$35.00$72,800.00$6,066.67
$50.00$104,000.00$8,666.67

Limits

  • Straight time assumed. Overtime multiplies the extra hours.
  • Ignores tax, benefits, and retirement.
  • Bonuses and commissions sit outside base pay.
  • Part year jobs need actual weeks, not 52.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing a salary to a wage without fixing hours. A higher salary at 55 hours can pay less per hour.
  • Counting 52 paid weeks while taking unpaid time off.
  • Mixing biweekly (26) with semi monthly (24) paycheck math.
  • Reading gross as take home and budgeting the full amount.
  • Ignoring overtime rules. Hourly overtime at time and a half changes real earnings fast.
