What it does

Scientific notation splits numbers into a coefficient between one and ten times a power of ten, which tames astronomical and microscopic values into readable forms. Twelve thousand becomes 1.2 times ten to the fourth, and a thousandth becomes 1 times ten to minus three.

The tool above converts both directions with E notation beside. Enter a plain number or a coefficient with exponent.

E notation mirrors the math for keyboards: 1.2345e+4 names the same value without superscripts. Spreadsheets, calculators, and code all speak it.

Significant figures ride along honestly. Trailing zeros in the coefficient count as measured precision, which plain integers with zeros cannot promise.

How to use

  1. Pick the direction first.
  2. Enter the plain number or the coefficient with exponent.
  3. Read the converted form with E notation.
  4. Keep coefficient digits to measured precision.

Formula

Shift the decimal to one leading digit; exponent counts places moved. Reverse: coefficient times ten to the exponent.
coefficient
Number from 1 to below 10 carrying the digits.
exponent
Decimal places shifted, signed by direction.

Zero has no scientific form since no shift normalizes it. Very large and tiny inputs cap at display limits here.

Worked example

Example: 12,345 to scientific

Number 12345, direction to scientific.

  1. Shift decimal four places: 1.2345.
  2. Exponent: +4.
  3. Answer: 1.2345 × 10^4.
  4. E notation: 1.2345e+4.

Limits

  • Range capped between millionths and 1e21.
  • Float precision trims far digits.
  • Zero has no normalized form.
  • Engineering notation groups by thousands separately.

Common mistakes

  • Leading with zero or two digits.
  • Flipping exponent signs.
  • Reading e+4 as times four.
  • Dropping significant trailing zeros.
  • Converting through rounded middles.

Questions

What is scientific notation?

Coefficient 1 to 10 times a power of ten. Compact for huge and tiny numbers.

What does e+4 mean?

Times ten to the fourth: 1.2345e+4 is 12,345.

Why normalize to one digit?

Standard form compares magnitudes at a glance by exponent.

How do I enter tiny numbers?

Negative exponents: 0.0025 is 2.5 × 10^-3.

What about engineering notation?

Exponents step by thousands (kilo, mega) for unit prefixes.

Does precision survive?

Kept digits do. Extra digits past float precision do not.
