Sheep Gestation Calculator
Lambing due date and window from breeding date.
What it does
Sheep gestation averages about 148 days, so breeders count forward from the first day of ram exposure rather than guessing from behavior. Ewes rarely read the calendar though, and healthy lambings spread across more than a week on either side of the average.
The tool above takes the breeding date and a flock average. It returns the due date with the 144 to 152 day normal window beside it, so shelter, feed, and night checks get planned around a span instead of a single morning.
The default breeding of October 10 2026 gives a due date of Sunday March 07 2027, with the window running Wednesday March 03 to Thursday March 11 2027. Dropping the average to 147 moves the due date to Saturday March 06 2027 while the window stays put.
These figures follow Ohio State sheep breeding guidance with North Dakota State accelerated breeding notes matching them. Both describe lambings landing roughly 145 to 148 days after breeding, with 144 to 152 days accepted as the normal spread.
How to use
- Enter the first date the ewe ran with the ram.
- Keep 148 unless your breed records run shorter or longer.
- Read the due date for the middle of lambing.
- Ready the lambing jugs and feed before the window opens.
- Start night checks at day 144 from breeding.
- Call the vet if day 152 passes with no labor.
Formula
- avg
- Flock average gestation in days, default 148.
- 144
- Day the normal window opens.
- 152
- Day the normal window closes; vet call past this.
All dates compute in UTC so time zones never shift a day. Breed literature often notes meat types near 144 to 147 and wool types near 148 to 151, which is why the average is adjustable while the 144 to 152 window stays fixed.
Worked example
Example: bred October 10 2026
Breeding date 2026-10-10, average 148 days.
- Due: Oct 10 + 148 days = Mar 7 2027.
- Early: Oct 10 + 144 = Mar 3 2027.
- Late: Oct 10 + 152 = Mar 11 2027.
- Check: 21 left in Oct, plus 30, 31, 31, 28 in Feb, plus 7 in Mar = 148.
- 147 day average: Oct 10 + 147 = Mar 6 2027.
- Tool shows Sun Mar 07 2027, window Wed Mar 03 2027 to Thu Mar 11 2027.
Reference table
| Mark | Date math | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 144 days | Window opens | Start night checks |
| 147 days | Frequent average | Peak watch days |
| 148 days | Default average | Feed and shelter ready |
| 152 days | Window closes | Call the vet past this |
Limits
- Breeding dates predict loosely; ram exposure spans days.
- Breed shifts averages by several days either way.
- Young ewes and thin feed scatter lambing timing.
- Calendar math never beats udder fill and behavior signs.
Common mistakes
- Treating the due date as exact.
- Skipping shelter prep until the window opens.
- Feeding late gestation ewes like open ewes.
- Missing a ewe lambing outside at night.
- Waiting past day 152 to call the vet.
Try it yourself
Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
Bred Nov 1 2026: due date?
Nov 1 + 148 = Mon Mar 29 2027.
Same breeding, 147 day average?
Sun Mar 28 2027.
Why plan the window, not the day?
Breed, age, and feed scatter real lambing across 144 to 152 days.
Questions
How long are sheep pregnant?
About 147 to 148 days on average, 144 to 152 days normally.
When do night checks start?
At day 144 from first breeding, before the window opens.
Do breeds differ?
Yes, often by several days; meat types trend shorter, wool types longer.
Why two averages, 147 and 148?
Sources round differently; the tool lets you pick either one.
What if day 152 passes?
Call the vet; overdue ewes need checking, not waiting.
Does feed change timing?
Steady late feed steadies timing; stress and thin condition scatter it.
