Storage Unit Size Calculator
Unit footprint, area, and volume from home size.
What it does
Storage units rent by the footprint, but belongings fill a cube. Matching the apartment to the standard unit ladder avoids paying for air or shuttling overflow back home.
The tool above takes home size in feet or meters. It returns the recommended unit, floor area, and volume at standard ceiling height.
The default 2 bedroom maps to 10 x 15 ft, or 150 ft2 holding 1200 ft3. The metric mirror reads 3 x 4.6 m with 13.9 m2 and 34 m3.
Industry size guidance runs 5x10 for studios through 10x30 for large homes, all near 8 ft ceilings. Federal mover guidance adds the transport half: written estimates, liability options, and red flags before moving day.
Measure the bulky trio first: mattress, sofa, and dresser footprints decide the unit more than box counts. Shelving and uniform boxes then convert floor area into stacked cube.

Questions
Which size for which home?
Studio 5x10, 1 bed 10x10, 2 bed 10x15, 3 bed 10x20, 4 bed plus 10x30, all at 8 ft ceilings.
How is volume figured?
Length times width times 8 ft ceiling height. Odd heights scale the same way.
How much fits per square foot?
Roughly 1.5 rooms per 25 ft2 packed tight with shelving and stacking.
Climate or drive up?
Climate control for wood, leather, paper, and electronics; drive up access for heavy loads.
One truckload equals one unit?
Rarely. Trucks cube 1,000 plus ft3, so shuttle in trips and stack to the ceiling.
Movers interact how?
Yes, through FMCSA mover rules on estimates and liability, plus the facility lease terms.
