What it does

Tip pools gather every tip in one jar, then divide by hours so full and part time staff share fairly. The hourly pool rate turns a busy Friday into one number the whole team can check.

The tool above takes total pooled tips, your hours, and total team hours. It returns your share, the pool rate per hour, and your percent of team hours, so an 8 hour shift in a 40 hour pool reads as $60.00 at $7.50 an hour.

This math fits hour weighted pools with one rate. It does not fit point systems where servers, bussers, and bartenders earn different points per hour, nor houses that keep a cut before pooling.

Labor guidance frames the same base: tipped staff customarily receive over $30 a month in tips, with direct cash wages plus tips meeting at least the federal minimum. Pool membership rules add who may join on top.

Post the three numbers with the schedule. When everyone sees total tips, total hours, and the rate, end of night questions drop.

How to use

  1. Enter total pooled tips for the period.
  2. Enter your hours in the same period.
  3. Enter total team hours across the pool.
  4. Read pool rate first to confirm dollars per hour.
  5. Read your share for the payout line.
  6. Read hour share to check your slice of time.

Formula

Rate = total tips / total hours. Share = rate x your hours. Percent = your hours / total hours x 100.
total tips
All tips pooled in the period, in dollars.
your hours
Hours you worked in the pool period.
total hours
Hours worked by everyone in the pool.

Your hours cannot sit above total hours. Zero total tips give zero rate and zero shares. Equal hours give equal shares under this single rate model.

Worked example

Example: $300 pool, 8 of 40 hours

Total tips 300, your hours 8, total team hours 40.

  1. Rate: 300 / 40 = $7.50 /h.
  2. Share: 7.50 x 8 = $60.00.
  3. Percent: 8 / 40 x 100 = 20.0 %.
  4. Tool shows share $60.00, rate $7.50 /h, hour share 20.0 %.
  5. Check: 60 / 300 equals 8 / 40, so pay matches time.

Limits

  • Single rate only. Point systems need weighted lines.
  • Ignores house cuts taken before pooling.
  • Ignores tax withholding on reported tips.
  • Eligibility rules decide who counts in total hours.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing by headcount instead of by hours.
  • Mixing two pool periods in one total.
  • Counting non pooled roles in total hours.
  • Forgetting your hours cannot top total hours.
  • Reading pool rate as a wage instead of a tip add on.
