Transit Card Rides Calculator
Turn card balance and fare into full rides left, leftover, and next ride need.
What it does
Stored value cards hide ride counts behind dollar balances. A $30 card at $2.75 a ride holds 10 full rides plus $2.50 stranded, which decides whether to reload before the gate.
The tool above takes card balance and fare per ride. It returns full rides, leftover balance, and the top up needed for one more ride, so Monday starts with a reload or a confident tap.
This math fits flat fares with no transfers or caps. It does not fit zone fares that change by distance, daily or monthly caps that stop charging, or passes that replace per ride math.
Transit data programs frame the same units agencies report: trips taken, miles traveled, and operating costs per ride. Riders only need the first of those divided into their balance.
Check whether your system allows negative boardings. Some cards let one ride go slightly negative, which shifts the reload point by a fare.
How to use
- Enter current card balance in dollars.
- Enter fare per ride for your route.
- Read full rides first for the week plan.
- Read leftover for stranded change.
- Read next ride needs for the reload amount.
- Reload when needs exceed pocket tolerance.
Formula
- balance
- Stored dollars on the card now.
- fare
- Dollars charged per ride.
- rides
- Whole rides the balance covers.
Floors give whole rides only. Exact balances leave zero with a full fare needed next. Transfer discounts and caps need agency specific pages.
Worked example
Example: $30 balance, $2.75 fare
Balance 30, fare 2.75 per ride.
- Rides: floor(30 / 2.75) = 10 rides.
- Used: 10 x 2.75 = $27.50.
- Left: 30 - 27.50 = $2.50.
- Need: 2.75 - 2.50 = $0.25 for ride 11.
- Tool shows 10 rides, leftover $2.50, needs $0.25.

Questions
How many rides are left on my card?
Divide balance by fare and round down. $30 at $2.75 is 10 rides.
What is leftover balance?
Balance minus rides times fare. 10 rides at $2.75 leave $2.50 of $30.
How much reload for one more ride?
Fare minus leftover. $2.50 left at $2.75 needs $0.25 more.
What if balance divides evenly?
Leftover is zero and the next ride needs a full fare.
Do transfers count?
Not here. Free or reduced transfers need agency rules added first.
Should I buy a pass instead?
Compare pass price against rides times fare for your week. Heavy weeks favor passes.
