Triathlon Time Calculator
Total finish time with leg shares from swim, bike, run splits.
What it does
Triathlon totals add three legs with two transitions in between: swim to bike and bike to run both cost minutes that separate planned splits from finish clocks. Counting all five gives the honest total.
The tool above takes each leg with both transitions in minutes. It returns the finish time with the longest leg share and the transition sum beside them.
The default 25 swim, 60 bike, 50 run with 3 and 2 minute transitions totals 140 minutes: 2:20:00 with bike longest at 42.9%. Transitions alone hold five minutes, free speed for practiced athletes.
Distances follow World Triathlon championship standards with Olympics sources matching them: Olympic 1.5 km swim, 40 km bike, 10 km run with sprint at half each.
How to use
- Enter each leg in minutes, decimals allowed.
- Enter both transition times honestly.
- Read total first for the finish clock.
- Read longest leg for where training pays.
- Attack transitions for the cheapest gains.
Formula
- T1 / T2
- Swim to bike and bike to run changes.
- share
- Each leg minutes over total minutes.
- h:mm:ss
- Finish clock format displayed.
Zeros allowed per leg for brick workouts missing a discipline. All zeros is rejected since no race exists.
Worked example
Example: 25 + 60 + 50 with 3 + 2
Defaults: swim 25, bike 60, run 50, T1 3, T2 2.
- Legs: 25 + 60 + 50 = 135 min.
- Changes: 3 + 2 = 5 min.
- Total: 140 min = 2:20:00.
- Bike share: 60 / 140 = 42.9%, longest.
- Tool shows 2:20:00, Bike (42.9%), 05:00.
Reference table
| Race | Swim / bike / run | Typical total |
|---|---|---|
| Sprint | 0.75 / 20 / 5 km | about 1:00-1:30 |
| Olympic | 1.5 / 40 / 10 km | about 2:00-3:00 |
| Half Iron | 1.9 / 90 / 21.1 km | about 4:30-6:30 |
| Full Iron | 3.8 / 180 / 42.2 km | about 9:00-14:00 |
Limits
- Splits in, totals out; pacing advice excluded.
- Course hills and wind shift real splits.
- Wetsuit and drafting rules vary by race.
- Cutoffs need per leg checks beside totals.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting both transitions in totals.
- Mixing hours with minutes across legs.
- Comparing hilly courses with flat PRs.
- Skipping brick workouts then fading on runs.
- Pacing the swim like a pool sprint.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
20 + 45 + 30 with 2 + 2?
101 min = 1:41:00.
Transitions share of 140?
5 / 140 = 3.6% free speed available.
Sprint vs Olympic?
Sprint halves each leg: 750 m, 20 km, 5 km.
Questions
How long is an Olympic triathlon?
1.5 km swim, 40 km bike, 10 km run; elites near 2 hours.
What is T1 and T2?
Swim to bike and bike to run changes, both counted in totals.
Which leg matters most?
Bike usually holds 40% plus of time; check your longest share.
How do I go faster cheaply?
Practice transitions: minutes saved without fitness gains.
Sprint distance?
750 m swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run: half Olympic.
Do I add warmup?
No. Race clock starts at your swim wave.
