Voting Wait Time Calculator
Turn voters in line, minutes each, and machines into wait for the last voter.
What it does
Poll lines clear at the pace of check in stations, not voter patience. Sixty voters at 3 minutes each over 4 stations put 15 per station, so the last voter waits 45 minutes.
The tool above takes voters in line, minutes each, and station count. It returns voters per station, last voter wait in minutes, and hours, so volunteers can open more tables before lines grow.
This math fits steady check in service only. It does not fit ballot marking time inside, provisional voters needing extra steps, or machine breakdowns that remove stations.
Election administration frames the same levers: polling place hours, staffing, and equipment tracked in national surveys, with voter experience studies measuring the line from the voter side.
Arrive with ID and registration checked. Prepared voters hold the minutes each figure that drives every result here.
How to use
- Count voters waiting now.
- Enter minutes each check in takes.
- Enter open check in stations.
- Read voters per station first for load.
- Read last wait for the honest estimate.
- Open stations when waits pass tolerance.
Formula
- voters
- People waiting in line now.
- minutes
- Check in minutes per voter.
- stations
- Open check in points sharing the line.
Even splitting is assumed across stations. Ballot marking inside needs its own line. Closed stations must leave the station count first.
Worked example
Example: 60 voters, 3 minutes each, 4 stations
Voters 60, minutes each 3, stations 4.
- Per station: 60 / 4 = 15 voters.
- Wait: 15 x 3 = 45 min wait.
- Hours: 45 / 60 = 0.75 h.
- Tool shows 15 voters, 45 min wait, 0.75 h.
- Fix: 6 stations cut per station to 10 and wait to 30 min.
Reference table
| Stations | Per station | Last wait |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 30 voters | 90 min wait |
| 4 | 15 voters | 45 min wait |
| 6 | 10 voters | 30 min wait |
Limits
- Check in only. Ballot marking time sits outside.
- Ignores provisional and first time voter extras.
- Ignores breakdowns removing stations midday.
- Arrivals during the wait extend real lines.
Common mistakes
- Dividing by total machines instead of open stations.
- Timing ballot marking as check in minutes.
- Forgetting new arrivals joining behind.
- Quoting average wait as last voter wait.
- Leaving closed stations in the count.

Questions
How long will voting take?
Voters over stations times minutes each. 60 at 3 over 4 is 45 minutes for the last voter.
What is voters per station?
Line load per open check in point. 60 over 4 is 15 each.
How do more stations help?
Linearly. Doubling open stations halves per station and the last wait.
Does ballot marking count?
Not here. Add inside booth time separately for total visit length.
What slows check in most?
Unprepared voters and closed stations. Both raise minutes each or cut stations.
When should polls add stations?
When last waits pass local tolerance, often 30 minutes.
