Water Filter Life Calculator
Turn gallons used and filter rating into percent used and days left.
What it does
Filter cartridges expire by gallons, not months alone. Twenty five gallons through a 40 gallon rating is 62.5% used with 15 gallons left, about 30 days at half a gallon daily.
The tool above takes gallons used, filter rating, and daily gallons. It returns percent used, gallons left, and days left, so pitcher and under sink swaps land on time.
This math tracks volume only. It does not test contaminant breakthrough, flow slowdown, or time based degradation in warm spare storage.
Water treatment guidance frames the same control: certified products with rated capacities, plus drinking water basics on sources and testing. Gallons here map that rating to a calendar.
Reset the counter at every change. Counters that survive swaps lie for a full cycle.
How to use
- Enter gallons run through the filter.
- Enter rated gallons from packaging.
- Enter daily gallons used.
- Read percent used first for urgency.
- Read gallons left for the volume line.
- Read days left to set the swap date.
Formula
- used
- Gallons already filtered.
- rating
- Rated gallon capacity of the cartridge.
- daily
- Gallons filtered each day.
Left floors at zero past rating. Taste alone cannot judge capacity left. Bypassed unfiltered water stays outside used counts.
Worked example
Example: 25 gallons used of 40 rated at 0.5 daily
Used 25 gallons, rating 40, daily 0.5 gallons.
- Percent: 25 / 40 x 100 = 62.5 % used.
- Left: 40 - 25 = 15 gal left.
- Days: 15 / 0.5 = 30 days left.
- Tool shows 62.5 % used, 15 gal left, 30 days left.
- Mark the swap 30 days out with a spare on hand.
Reference table
| Used | Percent | Days left at 0.5 daily |
|---|---|---|
| 10 gal | 25.0 % used | 60 days left |
| 25 gal | 62.5 % used | 30 days left |
| 40 gal | 100.0 % used | 0 days left |
Limits
- Volume only. Breakthrough and flow need senses plus schedule.
- Ignores unfiltered bypass water.
- Ignores shelf aging of spare cartridges.
- Ratings assume stated water quality ranges.
Common mistakes
- Tracking months instead of gallons.
- Forgetting to reset counters after swaps.
- Counting bypass water as filtered.
- Running past 100% on taste alone.
- Mixing pitcher and fridge ratings in one line.

Questions
When should I change my water filter?
At rated gallons or about 100% used. 40 of 40 gallons means now.
How many days will my filter last?
Gallons left divided by daily use. 15 gallons at 0.5 daily is 30 days.
Does taste tell filter life?
No. Capacity exhausts before taste always warns, so track gallons.
What does the rating mean?
Tested gallon capacity under standard conditions, printed on packaging.
Do I count bypass water?
No. Only filtered gallons age the cartridge.
Which certification matters?
Third party marks that test claims, found through certified product lists.
