Zinc Intake Calculator
Daily zinc mg vs RDA from foods plus supplement.
What it does
Zinc concentrates in shellfish and meat with plants trailing far behind. Three ounces of oysters carry 32 mg against an 11 mg male RDA while lentils carry 1.3 per half cup, so one oyster dinner overshoots while plant days undershoot. Food choice decides the total.
The tool above sums four lines against the RDA. Enter meat, beans/nuts, other foods, and supplement milligrams, pick the group, and it prints total, target, gap, and percent. Defaults total 8.3 mg against 11: 2.7 mg short at 75.5 %.
NIH tables supply every constant. Its professional sheet sets RDA rows with oysters 32, beef 3.8, crab 3.2, cereal 2.8, and lentils 1.3, while the consumer sheet confirms the 11/8 ladder. The National Academies zinc chapter stands behind the RDAs with a 40 mg adult upper limit.
Oysters break the scale both ways. A single serving passes the RDA several times over yet stays under the 40 mg upper limit, while strict plant diets need deliberate zinc planning. Chronic high doses block copper absorption, so supplements need clinician oversight.
How to use
- Enter meat mg (beef 3.8/3 oz).
- Enter beans/nuts mg (lentils 1.3).
- Enter other and supplement mg.
- Pick the RDA group.
- Read total first, then the gap.
- Mind the 40 mg adult UL.
Formula
- sources
- Mg from meat, beans, other foods, pills.
- RDA
- 8/9/11 by age and sex.
RDA and food mg follow NIH ODS professional and consumer sheets with the IOM zinc chapter behind them.
Worked example
Example: 8.3 mg vs 11 RDA
Defaults: meat 7, beans 1.3, RDA 11.
- Inputs: meat 7 mg (beef 3.8 + crab 3.2), beans 1.3, RDA 11 (man).
- Total: 7 + 1.3 = 8.3 mg.
- Gap: 11 minus 8.3 = 2.7 mg short.
- Tool shows 8.3 mg, 11 mg RDA, 2.7 mg short.
Reference table
| Item | mg | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Men 19+ RDA | 11 | Baseline |
| Women 19+ RDA | 8 | Lower need |
| Oysters 3 oz | 32 | Top food |
| Beef 3 oz | 3.8 | Top meat |
| Lentils 1/2 cup | 1.3 | Top plant |
Limits
- Planning math only. Absorption varies.
- Phytates cut plant zinc uptake.
- Upper limits need a clinician.
- Conditions adjust needs.
Common mistakes
- Counting one food and ignoring the rest.
- Megadosing past the 40 mg UL.
- Skipping the percent-of-RDA check.
- Treating the RDA as a ceiling.
- Ignoring copper interactions.
Try it yourself
Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
Oysters 32 mg, RDA 8?
Total 32. Gap 32 minus 8 = 24 mg over (400%). Under the 40 mg UL.
Oats, seeds, peanuts, cheddar (6.8 mg), RDA 11?
Total 2.3 + 2.2 + 0.8 + 1.5 = 6.8. Gap 11 minus 6.8 = 4.2 mg short.
Questions
How is the gap figured?
Sum food and supplement mg against the RDA. Here 8.3 vs 11 leaves 2.7 mg short.
What is the zinc RDA?
Men 11, women 8 (14-18: 11/9). Adult UL runs 40 mg.
How much zinc per food?
Oysters 32/3 oz, beef 3.8, crab 3.2, cereal 2.8, lentils 1.3, peanuts 0.8.
Can I split food groups?
Yes. Enter meat, beans, other foods, and supplement lines separately.
Do oysters overshoot?
Yes. One oyster serving can pass the RDA alone; track oyster days.
Can I overdo zinc?
Yes. Adult UL is 40 mg; chronic high zinc blocks copper. More is not better.
