What it does

Chocolate poisons dogs through methylxanthines, chiefly theobromine, and darker bars carry far more per bite. Milk chocolate holds 64 mg per oz while bakers chocolate holds 440, so the same two ounces can mean watchful waiting or an emergency dash.

The tool above takes the dog weight with chocolate type and amount. It returns the dose in mg per kg, the risk band, and the amount that would reach mild signs.

The default 20 lb dog with 2 oz milk chocolate lands at 14.1 mg/kg, below the 20 mild line, with mild signs starting near 2.8 oz. The metric mirror of 9.07 kg plus 56.7 g reads the same 14.1.

Doses follow the Merck Veterinary Manual table with Cornell canine health guidance behind it. Both put the vet call first at any dose, since signs lag 6 to 12 hours and sensitivity varies.

How to use

  1. Pick pounds or kilos for the dog weight.
  2. Enter the current weight.
  3. Pick the chocolate type eaten.
  4. Enter the amount in oz or grams.
  5. Read the dose first, then the risk band.
  6. Call the vet with these three numbers on screen.

Formula

Dose mg/kg = ounces x mg per oz / body kg. Mild signs from 20, heart effects from 40 to 50, seizures from 60.
ounces
Ounces eaten, from grams divided by 28.3495.
mg per oz
Methylxanthines per oz: milk 64, dark 150, bakers 440, cocoa 807, white 1.1.
body kg
Body weight in kg, from pounds divided by 2.20462.
20 / 40 / 60
Effect thresholds: 20 mild, 40 heart, 60 seizure.

Kilos convert from pounds first (divide by 2.20462), grams convert to ounces (divide by 28.3495), then the same math runs. Values are methylxanthine totals from the Merck table; single dogs vary, so treat every band edge with care.

Worked example

Example: 20 lb dog eats 2 oz milk chocolate

Imperial defaults: 20 lb dog, 2 oz milk chocolate.

  1. Weight: 20 lb / 2.20462 = 9.07 kg.
  2. Load: 2 oz x 64 mg/oz = 128 mg methylxanthines.
  3. Dose: 128 / 9.07 = 14.1 mg/kg.
  4. Band: under 20, below mild effect level.
  5. Mild line: 20 x 9.07 / 64 = 2.8 oz.
  6. Tool shows 14.1 mg/kg, Below mild effect level, 2.8 oz to mild signs.

Limits

  • Estimates from population tables, not a diagnosis for one dog.
  • Small dogs cross bands on crumbs; large dogs tolerate more.
  • Fat pancreatitis risk stands apart from theobromine math.
  • Wrappers and foil add a blockage risk of their own.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for vomiting before calling.
  • Guessing the type instead of reading the label.
  • Dosing hydrogen peroxide at home without orders.
  • Forgetting cocoa powder in baked goods.
  • Assuming white chocolate is fully safe.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

10 lb dog eats 1 oz dark chocolate?

Weight 4.54 kg, load 150 mg, dose 33.1 mg/kg: mild signs expected, line at 0.6 oz.

50 lb dog eats 4 oz milk chocolate?

Weight 22.68 kg, load 256 mg, dose 11.3 mg/kg: below mild, line at 7.1 oz.

20 lb dog eats 2 oz bakers chocolate?

Load 880 mg over 9.07 kg = 97 mg/kg: seizure risk, emergency care at once.

Questions

My dog just ate chocolate. What now?

Call your vet at once with the type and amount eaten. Do not wait for signs, which start 6 to 12 hours out.

Which chocolate is worst for dogs?

Dark and bakers chocolate. Cocoa powder tops the list at 807 mg per oz, 12 times milk chocolate.

What dose causes which signs?

Mild vomiting and thirst start near 20 mg per kg, heart effects near 40 to 50, seizures at 60 or more.

Can white chocolate still harm dogs?

Yes, in large bars. White chocolate holds little theobromine but its fat can inflame the pancreas.

Is my dog fine once vomiting stops?

No. Signs can last up to 72 hours and fat complications follow later, so keep the vet callback.

Are cats at risk as well?

Cats are sensitive too. Keep cocoa and dark chocolate away from every pet.
