Ebook Storage Calculator
Turn device storage and average book size into books that fit and space left.
What it does
Ebook libraries look weightless until a device fills. Eight gigabytes at 2 MB a book hold about 4,000 titles, which is why average file size decides the count more than title count does.
The tool above takes free storage in MB and average book size. It returns books that fit, space left, and megabytes more the next book needs, so sync lists can be trimmed before travel.
This math fits one average size across the library. It does not fit mixed PDFs with heavy scans beside light text files, nor system space the reader reserves outside books.
Free book projects frame the same unit: thousands of public domain titles in small text files beside larger illustrated editions. Open textbook programs add full course books at similar sizes.
Check illustrated titles separately. One fixed layout PDF can outweigh a hundred plain text novels.
How to use
- Enter free storage MB on the device.
- Enter average book MB for your formats.
- Read books that fit first for the sync cap.
- Read space left for the margin line.
- Read next book needs for the top up.
- Split heavy PDFs from light text lists.
Formula
- storage
- Free megabytes available for books.
- size
- Average megabytes per book file.
- books
- Whole books the space holds.
Floors give whole books only. Even division leaves zero with a full size still needed next. Mixed formats need grouped runs per size.
Worked example
Example: 8,000 MB free, 2 MB average book
Storage 8000 MB, book size 2 MB.
- Books: floor(8000 / 2) = 4,000 books.
- Used: 4000 x 2 = 8,000 MB.
- Left: 8000 - 8000 = 0 MB left.
- Need: 2 - 0 = 2 MB more for book 4,001.
- Tool shows 4,000 books, 0 MB left, 2 MB more.
Reference table
| Book size | Books fit | Space left |
|---|---|---|
| 1 MB | 8,000 books | 0 MB left |
| 2 MB | 4,000 books | 0 MB left |
| 5 MB | 1,600 books | 0 MB left |
Limits
- One average size per run. Mixed PDFs need split runs.
- Ignores system and app space outside books.
- Ignores cover art and annotation growth.
- Cloud shelves do not need device space.
Common mistakes
- Mixing GB and MB without multiplying by 1,000.
- Averaging text files with scanned PDFs.
- Forgetting system reserved space.
- Counting cloud titles as stored locally.
- Reading space left as another free book.

Questions
How many ebooks fit on my reader?
Divide free MB by average book MB and round down. 8,000 at 2 holds 4,000.
What is a typical ebook size?
Plain text novels often 1 to 3 MB. Illustrated PDFs run far larger.
Why is space left not a free book?
Only whole books count. 1 MB left still needs more for a 3 MB title.
Do I need GB to MB conversion?
Yes. Multiply GB by 1,000 for MB before entry on most readers.
What about cloud libraries?
Cloud titles need no device space until downloaded.
Should I split formats?
Yes. Run text and PDF sizes separately, then add book counts.
