Field Day Teams Calculator
Split students into even teams with full teams, leftovers, and group count.
What it does
Field day lives or dies on team counts. One hundred students at 12 per team make 8 full squads with 4 leftover, so stations plan 9 rotations while even scrimmages use 8.
The tool above takes student count and players per team. It returns full teams, leftover students, and total groups including the short group, so cones, bibs, and score sheets match the roster.
This math fits even team targets with one flexible group. It does not fit skill balanced drafts, buddy pairs that must stay together, or events needing exact even sides.
Physical education guidance frames the same base: standards based activity with inclusive grouping. Leftover plans keep every child playing instead of watching.
Decide the leftover rule before the whistle. Fold four into existing teams or run a proud short squad with a helper.
How to use
- Enter total students attending.
- Enter target players per team.
- Read full teams first for even play.
- Read leftover for the short group.
- Read total groups for station rotation.
- Assign helpers to balance the short squad.
Formula
- students
- Roster count attending field day.
- size
- Target players per team.
- groups
- Full teams plus the short group if any.
Team size must be at least 2. Even division leaves zero leftover with groups equal to full teams. Skill balancing sits outside even counts.
Worked example
Example: 100 students at 12 per team
Students 100, players per team 12.
- Full: floor(100 / 12) = 8 full teams.
- Used: 8 x 12 = 96 players placed.
- Left: 100 - 96 = 4 leftover.
- Groups: 8 + 1 = 9 groups.
- Tool shows 8 full teams, 4 leftover, 9 groups.
Reference table
| Per team | Full teams | Leftover |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 10 full teams | 0 leftover |
| 12 | 8 full teams | 4 leftover |
| 15 | 6 full teams | 10 leftover |
Limits
- Even counts only. Skill drafts need coach eyes.
- Ignores buddy pairs and rivalries.
- Ignores event minimums needing exact sides.
- Absentees on the day shift every count.
Common mistakes
- Dividing without flooring to full teams.
- Forgetting the short group in station counts.
- Stretching teams thin instead of adding a group.
- Planning scrimmages on group count with odd sides.
- Locking teams before attendance firms up.

Questions
How do I split field day teams?
Divide students by team size and round down for full teams. Leftovers form one more group.
What do I do with leftovers?
Fold them in evenly or run a short squad with a helper, then rotate.
Should stations use full or total groups?
Total groups. Every group needs a starting station including the short one.
Can teams be uneven?
Yes by a player or two. This page counts even targets first.
What about absentees?
Rerun with attending count on the morning of the event.
How many bibs do I need?
One per student plus spares, in team colors by group count.
